NEET Chemistry Syllabus 2027: All 20 Units Explained

Chemistry is the section where some NEET aspirants lose easy marks and others quietly collect them. The gap is rarely talent. It comes down to knowing exactly what is in the NEET chemistry syllabus 2027 and what is not.

This guide covers the syllabus unit by unit, separates what is confirmed from what is still awaited, and ends with a six-month plan you can start this week. If you want structured guidance alongside it, our NEET coaching in Guwahati is built around the same NCERT-first approach.

Chemistry carries the same weight as Physics. Each of the three subjects feeds the final rank, so a strong Chemistry score lifts your whole result.

Has the NEET Chemistry Syllabus Changed for 2027?

As of late October 2026, no separate 2027 syllabus has been published. Careers360’s NEET 2027 syllabus page says the NMC will release it on nmc.org.in on behalf of the NTA. Until then, it suggests using the previous year’s syllabus.

The NMC’s last big revision trimmed the older syllabus down to 79 chapters across the three subjects. Chapters widely reported as removed from Chemistry include Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Polymers, Environmental Chemistry and Chemistry in Everyday Life. Always confirm the final list against the official PDF on the NTA NEET portal once it goes live.

The bigger change for 2027 is the exam format. The government has said NEET-UG will move to computer-based testing from 2027, as reported by The Quint. The syllabus is expected to stay the same. Only how you answer it changes.

Physical Chemistry: Units 1 to 8

Physical Chemistry rewards practice. These units are about formulas, units and steady numerical work.

  • Unit 1, Some Basic Concepts in Chemistry: mole concept, empirical and molecular formulae, stoichiometry
  • Unit 2, Atomic Structure: Bohr model, quantum numbers, orbitals, electronic configuration
  • Unit 3, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure: VSEPR, hybridisation, molecular orbital theory, hydrogen bonding
  • Unit 4, Chemical Thermodynamics: enthalpy, Hess’s law, entropy, Gibbs energy
  • Unit 5, Solutions: concentration terms, Raoult’s law, colligative properties, van’t Hoff factor
  • Unit 6, Equilibrium: Kp and Kc, Le Chatelier’s principle, pH, buffers, solubility product
  • Unit 7, Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry: oxidation numbers, conductance, Nernst equation, Faraday’s laws
  • Unit 8, Chemical Kinetics: rate law, order, half-life, Arrhenius equation

Units 4, 6 and 7 are linked more than they look. Gibbs energy connects to equilibrium constants and to cell potential, so learn them as one chain.

Inorganic Chemistry: Units 9 to 12

Inorganic Chemistry is fact-heavy, and the facts sit in NCERT. Students who read the textbook line by line, including tables and exceptions, rarely lose marks here.

  • Unit 9, Classification of Elements and Periodicity: periodic trends in radius, ionisation enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy
  • Unit 10, p-Block Elements: groups 13 to 18, trends, anomalous behaviour of the first element in each group
  • Unit 11, d- and f-Block Elements: transition metal properties, KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7, lanthanoid contraction
  • Unit 12, Coordination Compounds: Werner’s theory, nomenclature, isomerism, crystal field theory

Build one-page revision sheets for the p-block and d-block. Colour, oxidation state and magnetic behaviour are asked again and again.

Organic Chemistry: Units 13 to 19

Organic Chemistry is about mechanisms. If you understand why a reaction happens, you stop memorising and start predicting.

  • Unit 13, Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds: crystallisation, distillation, chromatography, qualitative and quantitative analysis
  • Unit 14, Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry: IUPAC naming, inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation, reaction intermediates
  • Unit 15, Hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, benzene, electrophilic substitution
  • Unit 16, Organic Compounds Containing Halogens: preparation, reactions and substitution mechanisms
  • Unit 17, Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen: alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids
  • Unit 18, Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen: amines and diazonium salts
  • Unit 19, Biomolecules: carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, nucleic acids

Unit 14 is the foundation for everything after it. Spend extra time on electron movement before touching Unit 15.

Unit 20: Principles Related to Practical Chemistry

Many students skip this unit because there is no lab exam in NEET. That is a mistake, because theory questions come from it.

Expect questions on detecting nitrogen, sulphur and halogens in organic compounds, identifying functional groups, preparing Mohr’s salt and potash alum, and titrations involving oxalic acid and KMnO4. Qualitative salt analysis (common cations and anions) is part of the unit as well.

A Six-Month Plan for the NEET Chemistry Syllabus 2027

Early May 2027 is the tentative window, so you have about six months. Treat the dates below as a guide, not a rule.

  1. November to December 2026: finish Physical Chemistry (Units 1 to 8). Solve numericals daily.
  2. January 2027: read all Inorganic NCERT chapters twice. Make summary tables.
  3. February to March 2027: complete Organic Chemistry (Units 13 to 19). Maintain a notebook of named reactions and mechanisms.
  4. April 2027: take full-length mocks in CBT format. Review every wrong answer.
  5. Final two weeks: revise formula sheets, NCERT tables and your error notebook. Do not start new topics.

Past papers are useful for spotting which concepts the paper keeps returning to. The official portal is the safest place to find them. Practise on screen as well, since the paper is moving to CBT.

Resources That Actually Help

Start with the NCERT textbooks for Class 11 and 12. They are the base of the whole paper. Add one practice book for each branch once your NCERT reading is complete, not before.

Avoid collecting ten resources. One textbook and one question bank, revised three times, beat a shelf of unfinished books.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping Unit 20 because it feels like a lab topic
  • Reading Inorganic once and assuming it will stick
  • Memorising reactions without learning the mechanism
  • Practising only on paper when the exam will be on screen
  • Leaving Physical Chemistry numericals for the last month

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the NEET chemistry syllabus 2027?
It covers Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry from NCERT Class 11 and 12, organised into 20 units that include practical chemistry principles. Chemistry accounts for 45 questions and 180 marks.

2. Has the NMC released the NEET 2027 syllabus?
Not yet, as of late October 2026. The NMC publishes it for the NTA, so check nmc.org.in and neet.nta.nic.in. Until then, use the latest notified syllabus as your reference.

3. How many units are in the NEET Chemistry syllabus?
The current structure has 20 units: eight Physical, four Inorganic, and eight covering Organic Chemistry plus practical principles.

4. Is NCERT enough for NEET Chemistry?
NCERT is the foundation and the main source for Inorganic Chemistry in particular. Most students add a practice book for Physical and Organic numericals and mechanisms.

5. Will NEET 2027 be a computer-based test?
Yes. The government and the NTA have announced a shift to CBT from 2027, as covered by Medical Dialogues. The syllabus is expected to remain the same.

6. Is practical chemistry part of the NEET syllabus?
Yes. Unit 20 covers organic detection tests, functional group identification, salt preparation, titrations and qualitative salt analysis. Questions come as theory, not as a lab exam.
